Our 18-month lice nightmare started at Girl Scout camp, when a counselor shared with my daughter, who then shared with campers at several other camps that summer and her whole first-grade class. We finally ended the nightmare by cutting her hair, using prescription strength insecticide and doing nightly lice checks for months.

Vamousse Lice Protection shampoo suggests sending its prevention shampoo with your child to use as a replacement to regular shampoo while kids are at camp and two weeks after they come home. You can find it at Walmart, and online at Amazon.com and Drugstore.com. $12.99. www.vamousselice.com.

Many different lice removal companies around town also can help do a pre-camp and post-camp check and treatment if necessary. Lice Place offers a $12.50 inspection service, plus the cost of its terminator comb, $24.95. It also has a Camp Travel Kit which includes an 8-ounce-prevention shampoo, a 4-ounce prevention spray and a detangling brush for $27. theliceplace.com.

Fairy LiceMothers, also has a shampoo and spray. $9.99 for the 8-ounce MagicMint spray and $14.99 for an 8-ounce MagicHalo Shampoo. fairylicemothers.com.
