Sunrise, sunset, we’re looking at high schools, middle schools

I’m having a total “Fiddler on the Roof” week. I’ve been taking both kids to look at possible schools for next year. Ava will start middle school and Ben will start high school. High school! When did that happen?

As we parked our car in the parking lot of one high school last night, Ben turned to me and said, “I’m not ready.” I’m thinking… not ready because you’re still eating your taco? Not ready because you need to put away your homework? No, he didn’t feel ready because he’s a late bloomer and puberty (other than the stink) is taking its sweet time. He was worried he’d be the shortest boy there. Luckily, we saw some freshmen and sophomores who are also waiting for the blessing and curse of puberty. We also saw some seniors whom we mistook for teachers.

Ava, of course, is born ready for middle school. I think when she thinking the whole time when she was touring, “(Expletive)  this elementary school (expletive)!”. I think she’ll thrive on electives and multiple teachers and middle school drama. Her toughest decisions will be band, art or theater… all good choices … and how many clubs can she join?

I can’t wait to see where they land.
